This study aimed to investigate sustainability under six dimensions - environmental, social, cultural, economic, spatial and technological - and to propose, based on this framework, recommendations for designing more sustainable single-family housing and for its qualitative assessment. To achieve the recommendations, a Brazilian seal for assessment of sustainability in housing projects, called Selo Casa Azul, was used as base. A literature review was conducted to characterize each dimension of sustainability considered in this study. The assessment criteria of the Selo Casa Azul regarding these dimensions were classified, defining the breadth of the evaluation scope of the seal. The criteria were further classified as to the applicability for the sustainability assessment of single-family housing units. Additions to the scope of the seal were proposed and a list of recommendations was made by joining the criteria of the Selo Casa Azul considered applicable to the housing typology been studied and the proposed additions. Results showed that the Selo Casa Azul is an important tool for assessing sustainability in the Brazilian context by addressing issues related to the six dimensions considered. It was identified that the boundaries between the dimensions of sustainability are very tenuous, enabling the establishment of new relations between the criteria and these dimensions in future work. The proposed recommendations allow more sustainable practices to be adopted by small businesses and individual managers, and more qualitative assessments of sustainability on single-family residential buildings to be performed.
