Resumo: The purpose of this study was to assess the ability of ProTaper Gold (PTG; Dentsply Maillefer, Ballaigues, Suíça) in maintaining the original profile of root canal anatomy. For that, ProTaper Universal (PTU; Dentsply Maillefer, Ballaigues, Suíça) was used as reference techniques for comparison. Thirty simulated curved canals manufactured in clear resin blocks were randomly assigned to two groups (n = 10) according to the system used for canal instrumentation: PTU and PTG groups, upto F2 files (25/0.08). Color stereomicroscopic images from each block were taken exactly at the same position before and after instrumentation. All image processing and data analysis were performed with an open source program (FIJI). Evaluation of canal transportation was obtained for two independent canal regions: straight and curved levels. Student's t test was used with a cut-off for significance set at α = 5%. Instrumentation systems significantly influenced canal transportation (p < 0.0001). A significant interaction between instrumentation system and root canal level (p < 0.0001) was found. PTU and PTG systems produced similar canal transportation at the straight part, while PTG system resulted in lower canal transportation than PTU system at the curved part. Canal transportation was higher at the curved canal portion (p < 0.0001). PTG system produced overall less canal transportation in the curved portion when compared to PTU system.

PTG system produced overall less canal transportation in the curved portion when compared to PTU system.Este estudo avaliou a habilidade dos sistemas rotatórios ProTaper Gold (PTG; Dentsply Maillefer, Ballaigues, Suíça) e ProTaper Universal (PTU; Dentsply Maillefer, Ballaigues, Suíça) na manutenção do perfil original da anatomia do canal radicular. Para isso, trinta canais radiculares curvos simulados em blocos de resina foram divididos randomicamente em dois grupos (n = 10) de acordo com o sistema de instrumentação: PTU e PTG, instrumentados até a lima F2 (25/0.08). Dez blocos foram utilizados como um grupo de controle em que nenhuma instrumentação foi realizada. Imagens estereomicroscópica de cada bloco foram tomadas exatamente na mesma posição antes e após a instrumentação. Todo o processamento de imagens e análises de dados foram realizadas com um programa de código aberto (FIJI). Avaliação do transporte do canal foi realizada em duas regiões do canal independentes: porções retas e curvas. Para análise estatística foi utilizado o test t para amostras pareadas com um nível de significância de 5%. O sistema de instrumentação utilizado influenciou significativamente o transporte do canal (p < 0,0001). Uma significante relação entre o sistema de instrumentação e o nível do canal radicular foi notado ( p < 0,0001). Os sistemas PTU e PTG apresentaram transporte do canal igual na porção reta, enquanto o sistema PTG apresentou um menor transporte de canal do que o sistema PTU na porção curva do canal. O transporte do canal foi maior na porção curva do canal ( p < 0,0001).
