Resumo: | The present study, done in the city of Rio de Janeiro in two different institutions named Group A and Group B, had the objective to evaluate the oral health of patients with special needs and the problems found by parents to maintain the oral health of their sons.Verify the presence of visible plaques and/or gingivites in patients, as well, correlate the economic level of parents with their needs, and verify if the difficulties pointed will be the same showed, and also see if there is any kind of concern by physicians about the oral health of patients with special needs. A sample was constituted by 102 pairs (parents and children), of which 51 pairs belongs to group A and 51 pairs belongs to group B. The groups presented themselves far different as to social-economic and cultural conditions, and well balanced in terms of gender, 51% from the patients are female and 49% are male. The mean of the patients’s age, on the total sample, was 12 years old. The interviews were done together with children and parents, and right after, the clinical exames were done. The results of the exams showed that in spite of the social-economic differences between the groups (p-value less than 0,001), the great difficulties pointed by the parents to maintain their children oral health were the same: finding a dentist to take care of their children; and the high cost of dental care. As to the doctor’s concernings in relation to the oral health of their mentally retarded pacients, it was shown that just few doctors care about it. The results showed that 66.3% of pediatricians did not send their pacients to a dentist, what demonstrate that the pediatrician’s job is individualized. It was verified that these pacients showed a high number of invasive oral treatment and the lower the parent's educational and social level, the higher the chances of their sons presenting visible plaque and gingivites. It was also observed that the difficulties found by parents were also risk factors to the oral health of their children. Which suggests, in that way, that is necessary the implementation of a protocol program - with a multidiciplinary vision – of primarily educational and preventive attention to children with special needs. |

Submitted by Janser dos Santos Nascimento (janser.nascimento@unigranrio.com.br) on 2016-11-14T15:18:59Z No. of bitstreams: 2 license_rdf: 0 bytes, checksum: d41d8cd98f00b204e9800998ecf8427e (MD5) Pinkie Seabra Marra.pdf: 1292852 bytes, checksum: e52e8a50e1f3b2ec99b45570e90c73ea (MD5)Made available in DSpace on 2016-11-14T15:18:59Z (GMT). It was also observed that the difficulties found by parents were also risk factors to the oral health of their children. Which suggests, in that way, that is necessary the implementation of a protocol program - with a multidiciplinary vision – of primarily educational and preventive attention to children with special needs. |
