Resumo: From a study that aimed at analyzing the composition and recomposition ofsocial networks of chronic quadriplegic individuals, we studied the tensions andparadoxes that emerge from the situation of complete dependence of an individualon the help of other people to ensure their survival. The research is part of thequalitative research field. We analyzed, in this article, the case of a young patientwith acquired tetraplegia. The data were obtained based on biographical narrativeand interviews guided by semistructured scripts. The analysis of the changes andpermanences of the social networks of support showed to be an instrument capableof allowing a better understanding of the dynamics of care adopted in situationsof high dependence. It was evidenced that the presence of a social network, evenif it is emptied and weakened, is determinant in the adoption of positive copingstrategies of quadriplegia.It was observed the importance of a greater presence ofthe State in the support of these families and the awareness of the society to acceptand not repudiate the diversity resulting from the deficiency.

La investigación se inscribe en el campo de la investigación cualitativa. En este artículo analizamos el caso deun joven portador de tetraplejia adquirida. Los datos fueron obtenidos con base en narrativa biográfica y entrevistas semiestructuradas. El análisis de las redes sociales de apoyo mostró ser un instrumento capaz de permitir una mejor comprensión de las dinámicas de cuidado adoptadas en situación de alta dependencia. Se evidenció que la presencia de una red social, aunque vaciada y fragilizada, es determinante en la adopción de estrategias positivas de enfrentamiento de la tetraplejia. Se observó la importancia de una mayor presencia del Estado en el apoyo a las familias y también la sensibilización de la sociedad a fin de acoger y no repudiar la diversidad resultante de la discapacidadA partir d'une étude visant à analyser la composition et la recomposition des réseaux sociaux d'individus tétraplégiques chroniques, nous avons étudié les tensions et les paradoxes qui émergent de la situation de dépendance totale d'un individu sur l'aide d'autrui pour assurer sa survie. La recherche fait partie du domaine de la recherche qualitative. Nous avons analysé, dans cet article, le cas d'un jeune patient atteint detétraplégie acquise. Les données ont été obtenues à partir de récits biographiques et d'interviews guidées par des scripts semi-structurés. L'analyse des changements et des permanences des réseaux de soutien social s'est révélée être un instrument capable de permettre une meilleure compréhension de la dynamique de prise en charge adoptée dans les situations de forte dépendance. Il a été démontré que la présence d'un réseau social, même s'il est vidé et affaibli, est déterminante dans l'adoption de stratégies d'adaptation positives de la tétraplégie. Evidenciou-se que a presença de uma rede social, mesmo que esvaziada e fragilizada, é determinante na adoção de estratégias positivas de enfrentamento da tetraplegia.
