Resumo: Capitalism and liberal democracy, both based on the principles of individual freedom, have relied on each other in their spreading across the globe. This model has been disseminated without further questioning in the West, particularly in Latin America. On the other hand, the symbiotic combination of democracy and capitalism in the East is imposed through a domination process, since it is a model of society different from the original western societies. So, thinking of democracy in terms of what is presented to us today means to understand that it is, in its origin and essence, inseparable from one specific economic model. This article discusses the concept of democracy, considering its social meaning, and the characteristics of the Latin American countries.

Latin America.Capitalism and liberal democracy, both based on the principles of individual freedom, have relied on each other in their spreading across the globe.
