Morphology and syntax of nominalization in Kaingáng (Southern Jê)

The purpose of this article is to examine the nominalization of verbal stems morphologically and syntactically in the Kaingáng language (Jê family, stock Macro-Jê), resulting in action nominals. We demonstrate that, from the lexical point of view, action nouns refer to verbal activity and are the basis for other derivations in the language, such as the one that derives nouns of circumstances (place, instrument, and time). In syntactic terms, action nouns are employed in several functions: argument, modifier, a complement of a nominal predicate, and lexical core of constructions with auxiliary verbs. Although the Kaingáng language exhibits formal and functional correspondences in the derivation of action nouns with the other Jê languages, there are notable differences that may correspond to the extensions of its uses to other syntactic contexts.
