Resumo: Our goal is to compare the reports of the German traveler Karl von den Steinen about the contact with the Bakairi in the years 1884 and 1887 with the reports of some Bakairi, our consultants in researchs conducted in 1984 and 1985 in the Pakuenra village, Mato Grosso, Central Brazil. At stake is the way the Kurâ Bakairi are identified by the traveler from an ethnocentric look that cuts through customs, behaviors, language structures and cognitive abilities.
