Resumo: Following the paths opened by the critical studies of whiteness and establishing a dialogue with the bibliography on slavery, the central theme of this article is the color white. The main objective is to decipher the meanings of being white in slaveholding Brazil, during the period between the end of the 18th century and the first half of the 19th century. Considering that the social classification criteria in force at that time were inherited from the Portuguese Ancien Régime and modified in the daily life of local social relations, it seeks to identify some connections between the meanings of whiteness elaborated in Europe and in the Portuguese colonies in different parts of the globe, in order to, secondly, to investigate more extensively the Brazilian context. The reflections are based on various sources, such as dictionaries, royal charters, travelers' records, newspapers and blood purity statutes.
