Resumo: This article intends to analyze the disputes around the competence and the way to suspend the justices of the peace, central agents in the legal arrangement erected in the first 19th century, using as a starting point situations of conflict of jurisdiction that aggravated the mood in the interior of the province of Minas Gerais. The objective is to obtain a better understanding of the experience of the 19th century regarding the justice of the peace, as well as the controversies and tensions that permeated the process of building the nation’s legal system.
