Pompous sails cross the bay: property, freedom and labour relations between rowers and boaters in Rio de Janeiro (c.1830-c.1850)

This article analyses the maritime labour market in Rio de Janeiro's Bay between the 1830s and 1850s; investigates the workers, rowers, and boatmen of rowing and sailing boats involved in transporting people and goods between the city's beaches. The objective is to problematize the tight separation between property and work and reflect on the forms of coercion and compulsion that compelled them to work in the nineteenth century. Thus, the objective is also to propose a reflection on the different meanings that this process had for whites and non-whites, enslaved, freed, and “free”.
