Jurisdiction conflict in the 17th century viceroyalty of Peru: Melchor de Liñan y Cisneros and the defense of ecclesiastical immunity

Resumo: This article aims to discuss the relationship between secular and religious power in Spanish America in the late 17th century. In a context where jurisdictions were not clearly defined, friction between secular and religious authorities was common. Based on the issuing of a decree by the viceroy of Peru and its challenge by the archbishop of Lima, we seek to reflect on the role of the episcopate in the government structure of Spanish America and its alleged submission to royal power.
