The police forces in the “June Journeys” of 2013: a study on the criminalization of the manifestations in Porto Alegre/RS

Based on political-criminological contributions, this article intends to understand the forms of action of the police forces in contemporaryBrazil, specifically those linked to the phenomenon of the criminalization of social movements. Taking into account the so-called “Journeys of June” of 2013, related to the brand new social movements that have surfaced in different parts of the world in the last decade, it is pointed out to the performances of the civil and military police, constantly called to deal with such manifestations, which echoed systematic strategies of their authoritarian legacies. Therefore, are presentedsome partial results of the analysis of the police investigation constructed by the civil police for the purpose of criminalizing the demonstrators who participated in the “Journeys of June” in the city of Porto Alegre in the year 2013. In consistent terms, therefore, through the discursive understanding of the demonstrators, how power relations are constituted in the configuration of the criminal as a social enemy, forging groups that are inescapably subject to the sovereign power of the police.
