Deaths in the countryside and the greenwashing of “agro”: invisibilization of massive social harms in Brazil

Resumo: This work is part of the attempt to displace the field of critical criminology in at least two ways: from the urban to the rural; from the criminal control system to the sphere of immunization in the collusion between agrarian, political and economic elites, national and transnational corporations. Aware of the importance of discourse as a form of denial of social harms caused by powerful actors, the research is oriented to the analysis of two documents related to agribusiness, one official and the other one of propaganda. Through a systematic review of the literature on social damages and crimes of the powerful and of documental research, the conclusion points to an operation of agribusiness greenwashing by the hegemonic media and government, through the invisibility of the harms caused by this model of production. It seeks to obtain symbolic capital for the adoption of policies of the interests of large landowners and transnational corporations.

Ciente da importância do discurso como forma de negação dos danos causados por atores poderosos, a pesquisa se orienta à análise de dois documentos relacionados ao agronegócio, um oficial e outro de propaganda. Através de revisão sistemática da literatura sobre danos sociais e crimes dos poderosos e de pesquisa documental, a conclusão aponta para uma operação de greenwashing do agronegócio pelos meios de comunicação hegemônicos e governo, através da invisibilização dos danos causados por esse modelo de produção.
