Resumo: This paper presents results of an experiment on epithets in Brazilian Portuguese, with sentences with the verb convencer ‘to convince’ and sentences with adjunct clauses. The assumption that the distribution of epithets is subject to Principle C of  Binding Theory (Chosmky 1981) goes back to Lasnik (1976) and is controversial in the literature. We argue that although this assumption is not able to explain all of our results, the experiment shows that the distribution of epithets is sensitive to c-command configurations. Therefore, we believe that the most appropriate analyses for epithets are those that take into account this syntactic notion in addition to semantic/pragmatic restrictions.

A assunção de que a distribuição dos epítetos obedece ao Princípio C da Teoria de Ligação (CHOMSKY, 1981) remonta a Lasnik (1976) e é controversa na literatura. Argumento que, apesar de essa assunção não ser capaz de explicar todos os resultados do experimento, o comportamento encontrado pelo experimento demonstra que a distribuição dos epítetos é sensível às configurações de c-comando dos estímulos.
