NON-LINEAR STRESS ANALYSIS AND GEOMETRY IMPROVEMENT OF PACKERS’ LOCK RINGS

Resumo: | The petroleum industry uses a variety of exploration equipment and efforts are constantly made to increase their efficiency and reliability. Packer is one of these equipment, being mounted inside an oil completion well with the main function to isolate pressure between the production casing and the installed tubing (where oil flows). Some packers have an anchoring device to avoid axial displacement in relation to the production casing. The anchor principle is based on friction forces generated by pushing slips against the casing, through mechanical or hydraulic forces. Once constant application of forces is not practical in most situations, a lock ring is normally used to avoid the slips returning to the initial position. The lock ring is basically a circular section with an open segment and the internal face of the ring is designed with buttress threads (ASME B1.9), this geometry allows displacement in only one direction due to ring’s diameter deformation. Lock ring failure can compromise the completion operation or damage the packer, preventing further utilization. The purpose of this work is to evaluate some geometry modifications to the buttress threads to reduce stress acting on the lock ring. The study will be carried using non-linear finite element analysis. |

O packer é um equipamento aplicado dentro do poço de completação com função principal de isolar pressão entre a coluna de produção (onde o óleo flui) e o revestimento (parede do reservatório), devido à compressão do elemento de vedação. Alguns packers têm um dispositivo de ancoramento que evita deslocamento axial da linha. A ancoragem é feita pelas forças de atrito das cunhas pressionadas contra o revestimento, utilizando forças mecânicas ou hidráulicas. Como não é prático aplicar força constantemente, um anel trava é utilizado para impedir o retorno das cunhas e do elemento de vedação para a posição inicial. O anel trava é cilíndrico com um rasgo longitudinal e possui rosca buttress (ASME B1.9) na face interna; geometria que possibilita a abertura –deformação– do anel e deslocamento axial. A falha do anel trava pode comprometer a operação de completação. O propósito deste trabalho é avaliar modificações na geometria do anel trava de maneira a reduzir as tensões atuantes.
