Celebration of the “Puxada do Mastro de São Sebastião (IlhéusBA)” in the context of the pandemi

The pandemic caused by the new coronavirus has brought extensive impacts to different sectors of society. It discusses here the effects and impacts in the sociocultural sphere caused by the pandemic to the celebration of “Puxada do Mastro de São Sebastião” in Ilhéus (BA). The municipality belongs to “Costa do Cacau”, on the regionalization map of Bahia tourism. The city is characterized both by its natural attractions, coastal extension, presence of the cacao crop and the Atlantic Forest, as well as by the set of cultural heritage, memories and permanences of different ethnic groups and by the history associated with the writer Jorge Amado. In Olivença there is the secular and emblematic celebration of Puxada do Mastro, bringing the whole community together and attracting visitors to participate in the festivities dedicated to the holy martyr, São Sebastião. The current challenge, focuses on the attempt to preserve identity and safeguard the rites of tradition and face contamination with the virus (Sars-Cov-2) in the region. This research is part of a set of research actions, undertaken by community leaders and governments, to support planning and construction strategies for the celebration. The objective is to identify and analyze the apprehensions and doubts that the context poses to the community, highlighting the residents' perception of the impacts of Covid-19 for the formatting of the cultural celebration. This is a qualitative research developed remotely. The technical means of investigation used to achieve the objective were netnographic research and application of a semi-structured questionnaire online. Finally, in the results, the graphs and data related to the perception of members of the community about the referred effects and the symbolic perspectives for the celebration in the context of COVID-19 are presented, considering the conditions of realization, the impacts of the reformulation, the insertion and acceptance of technology and the reverberations in the region's community and tourism.
