To quantify the occurrenceand to identify the reasons forcancellation of surgical procedures in ateaching hospital. Methodology: Aquantitative, descriptive anddocumentary study, carried out in a teaching hospital in the state of Paraná,Brazil, using a surgery schedule mapcontaining data of surgical proceduresscheduled and canceled from February2015 to February 2016. Results: 3,384procedures were scheduled, of which638 were canceled, obtaining acancellation rate of 18.8%. Thespecialty with the highest rate ofcancellation was orthopedics andtraumatology (42.3%), followed bygeneral surgery (24.5%) and neurology(10.5%). The reasons for cancellationwere related primarily to humanresources, secondly to those in whichthere was no annotation of reasons forcancellation, and thirdly to patientrelatedreasons. Conclusion: With thedevelopment of this study it waspossible to verify the situationexperienced by the institution. Weexplain the importance and necessity ofrethinking the practices performed in asurgical center with a view to reducingas much as possible the cancellation ofsurgeries, since this damages bothpatients and the service.
