Nature-Based Solutions as adaptation to sea level rise: a systematic review

Resumo: One of the Climate Change's effects is the sea level rise, which could have numerous negative consequences for coastal cities, especially for those that are more vulnerable or heavily populated. Simultaneously, research on adaptation solutions that integrate human and natural systems, such as Nature-Based Solutions (NBS), is being expanded, encouraging the adoption of more resilient mitigation and adaptation strategies. Thus, this article aims at a systematic literature review on NBS techniques implemented in coastal regions in scenarios of sea level rise to understand gaps, challenges and potentialities. The results showed that there are few publications on the subject, mainly in developing countries, and that the effectiveness of NBS is linked to the physical, cultural, and socioeconomic conditions of the place, not being, therefore, effective in all scenarios.

Simultáneamente, se está ampliando la investigación sobre soluciones de adaptación que integran los sistemas humanos y naturales, como las soluciones basadas en la naturaleza (SBN), alentando la adopción de estrategias de mitigación y adaptación más resilientes. Por lo tanto, este artículo tiene como objetivo una revisión sistemática de la literatura sobre técnicas de SBN implementadas en regiones costeras en escenarios de aumento del nivel del mar para comprender las brechas, los desafíos y el potencial. Los resultados mostraron que aún existen pocas publicaciones sobre el tema, principalmente en los países en desarrollo, y que la efectividad de las SBN está ligada a las condiciones físicas, culturales y socioeconómicas del lugar, no siendo, por tanto, efectivas en todos los escenarios.Um dos efeitos das Mudanças Climáticas é o aumento do nível do mar, que poderá trazer inúmeras consequências negativas para cidades costeiras, especialmente para aquelas mais vulneráveis ou mais populosas. Simultaneamente, as pesquisas em torno de soluções de adaptação que integrem os sistemas humanos e naturais, como as Soluções Baseadas na Natureza (SBN), estão sendo ampliadas, incentivando a adoção de estratégias de mitigação e adaptação mais resilientes. Assim, este artigo apresenta os resultados da revisão sistemática de literatura sobre as técnicas tipo SBN implementadas em regiões costeiras nos cenários de aumento do nível do mar a fim de compreender lacunas, desafios e potencialidades.
