Vegetation importance on the urban planning of Quito, Ecuador

Resumo: | When heat island effect is the concern, urban areas are more impacted by this phenomenon than rural and natural landscapes. Land cover greatly influences on the emergence of heat islands, which has expanded in cities across the world. Green infrastructure is one of the most effective cooling tools available in cities for mitigating heat island effects. In this scenario, Quito is a city that experiences a very high solar radiation index due to its geographic location and latitude, and this study aimed to investigate the effects of green infrastructure on sun exposure and comfort level of Quito inhabitants. The study was based on information available in the literature and gathered data of El Ejido park from Guarderas, Cohello and Silva (2016), who used representative tree species of El Ejido park to evaluate their effect on microclimatic regulation. It turned out that under tree shade the temperature under Quito climate conditions decreased 2oC, the relative humidity was lower than in open areas and the intensity of light was almost half that of measured in the open areas. It was concluded that trees contributed to regulate the urban microclimate in Quito. |

Cuando hablamos del efecto de la isla de calor, las zonas urbanas siempre se ven más afectadas que las áreas rurales ya que la cobertura de los suelos influye mucho para que este efecto se incremente cada vez más, como ha sucedido en los últimos años en todo el planeta. La infraestructura verde urbana es una de las herramientas más importantes que puede ayudar en el efecto de enfriamiento de las ciudades. Quito es una ciudad que sufre de un índice muy alto de radiación por su ubicación y latitud geográfica, por lo tanto, el objetivo de este texto es tomar datos de estudios previamente realizados en Quito y otras ciudades del mundo que nos brinden resultados para comprobar que la vegetación puede ser muy útil para mejorar el comfort de los ciudadanos y sobretodo disminuir la exposición al sol. En el parque El Ejido en el centro de Quito, se obtuvo una disminución de 2oC en la temperatura debajo de la sombra de los árboles con respecto al área expuesta. En parques, especialmente en Asia, pudimos comprobar que la forma, tamaño, cantidad y variedad de vegetación influye mucho en el enfriamiento de ciudades.Quando falamos do efeito da ilha de calor, as zonas urbanas são mais afetadas do que as áreas rurais circundantes, pois a cobertura do solo tem uma grande influência neste efeito, que têm aumentado cada vez mais nos últimos anos em todo o planeta. A infraestrutura verde urbana é uma das ferramentas mais importantes para auxiliar no efeito de esfriamento das cidades. Quito é uma cidade que possui um índice muito alto de radiação devido sua localização e latitude geográfica. Dessa forma, o objetivo do artigo é adquirir dados de estudos feitos previamente em Quito e em outras cidades do mundo para verificar a utilidade da vegetação na melhoria do conforto para os cidadãos, e especialmente diminuir a exposição ao sol. No parque de Ejido em Quito, foi obtido um decréscimo de 2oC na temperatura sob a sombra das árvores em relação à área exposta.
