The urbanism: utopia, models and temporality. From Françoise Choay

Resumo: The historian of ideas and philosopher Françoise Choay has contributed to structuring the intellectual field of urban planning. The article returns to the notion of model as it has been mobilized in particular in two books in particular : Urbanism : utopias and realities [L’urbanisme : utopies et réalités] (1965) and The Rule and the Model (1996 [1980]), understood both as milestones for reflection and complementary approaches. After a clarification of the notion of model understood as an image of the future city, it appears that this is seen to be durably close to that of utopia in Choay's work. The article wonders if a too closed conception of one and the other as intended to be applied is not a cause of the lesser relevance of their practical value, and their poor applicability to more recent theories. A second theme in the development of the work, temporality, fuels a new interest.

Este artículo examina la noción de modelo tal y como ha sido utilizada en dos obras en particular: L'urbanisme: utopies et réalités (1965) y La règle et le modèle (1980), que se consideran a la vez hitos del pensamiento y enfoques complementarios. Tras aclarar el concepto de modelo como imagen de la ciudad futura, se pone de manifiesto que el concepto de modelo de Choay está estrechamente relacionado con el de utopía. El artículo se pregunta si una concepción excesivamente cerrada de ambos como conceptos destinados a ser aplicados no es causa, después de su gran éxito, de la menor relevancia de su valor práctico y de su escasa aplicabilidad a teorías más recientes. Un segundo tema en el desarrollo de la obra, la temporalidad, es fuente de nuevo interés.L’historienne des idées et philosophe Françoise Choay a contribué à structurer le champ intellectuel de l’urbanisme. L’article revient sur la notion de modèle telle que celle-ci a été mobilisée dans deux ouvrages en particulier : L’urbanisme : utopies et réalités (1965) et La règle et le modèle (1980), compris à la fois comme les jalons d’une pensée et des approches complémentaires. Après une clarification du concept de modèle entendu comme image de la ville future, il apparaît que celui-ci se voit chez Choay durablement rapproché de celui d’utopie. L’article se demande si une conception trop fermée de l’un et de l’autre comme se destinant à être appliqués n’est pas une cause, après celui de leur important succès, de la moindre pertinence de leur valeur pratique, et de leur faible applicabilité aux théories plus récentes. Une thématique seconde dans le développement de l’œuvre, la temporalité, nourrit un nouvel intérêt.A historiadora de ideias e filósofa Françoise Choay ajudou a estruturar o campo intelectual do planejamento urbano. Este artigo faz uma retrospectiva da noção de modelo conforme ela foi usada em duas obras em particular: L'urbanisme: utopies et réalités (1965) e La règle et le modèle (1980), que são vistas como marcos do pensamento e abordagens complementares. Depois de esclarecer o conceito de modelo como uma imagem da cidade futura, fica claro que o conceito de modelo de Choay está intimamente relacionado ao de utopia. O artigo questiona se uma concepção excessivamente fechada de ambos como destinados a serem aplicados não é a causa, depois de seu grande sucesso, da menor relevância de seu valor prático e de sua pouca aplicabilidade a teorias mais recentes.
