Essa afecção causa uma paralisia de neurônio motor inferior geralmente unilateral, mas existem relatos de acometimento bilateral. Acomete animais de meia-idade com mais de 5 anos e existe uma prevalência maior em algumas raças específicas. Assim como nos humanos, o principal sinal clínico da paralisia de nervo facial é a assimetria facial com incapacidade de movimentação dos músculos faciais podendo levar a uma série de complicações dependendo de sua localização e das variações específicas e individuais no padrão de ramificação. A maioria dos casos tem etiologia idiopática sendo considerada afecção primária, mas existe uma grande quantidade de diagnósticos diferenciais e nesses casos é necessário identificar a causa primária para uma correta abordagem da paralisia facial. This condition causes a paralysis of lower motor neuron generally unilateral, but there are reports of bilateral involvement. It generally affects animals of middle age, over 5 years old, and there is a higher prevalence in some specific breeds. As in humans, the main clinical sign of facial nerve palsy is facial asymmetry with inability to move the facial muscles, leading to a series of complications depending on its location, and individual and specific variations in the branching pattern. Most cases have idiopathic etiology, being considered the primary affection, but there are a large number of differential diagnoses, in these cases it is necessary to identify the primary cause for a correct approach to facial paralysis.
