Produtos florestais não-madeireiros são produtos derivados de espécies de áreas de vegetação que não a madeira, e são de grande importância para populações que vivem nas adjacências dessas áreas. A vegetação de canga é uma formação vegetal composta predominantemente de ervas e arbustos que ocorre nas áreas de clareira entre as florestas da FLONA de Carajás, onde o solo é rochoso e possui afloramentos de minério de ferro. O fato de estar em uma área onde a atividade de mineração é intensa põe a vegetação de canga em grande risco. A forma mais consolidada de valoração de áreas de vegetação se dá através da madeira, portanto os produtos florestais não-madeireiros podem ser uma alternativa para auxiliar na valoração e conservação da vegetação de canga. O potencial de PFNM para conservação de áreas de vegetação e sua biodiversidade é bastante discutido na literatura. Propõe-se evidenciar que mesmo uma formação vegetal pouco estudada e aparentemente prescindível diante das formas tradicionais de valoração da vegetação pode possuir grande relevância ecológica e potencial de utilização. _________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACTThis work aims to systematize information on the economic potential of non-timber forest products (NTFP) from plant species of canga vegetation in the Nacional Forest of Carajás, Pará state, Northern Brazil. Non-timber forest products are non-woody products extracted from plant species with great importance to local livelihoods. The canga vegetation is composed mostly by herbs and shrubs and occurs in clear areas between the forests in the National Forest of Carajás, on rocky soil outcrops rich in iron. The fact that the canga vegetation is located within an area of high mining activity imposes a great threat upon these ecosystems. The most consolidated way of plant valuation is based on woody products. Thereby the non-timber forest products can be an alternative to help in the valuation and conservation of the canga vegetation. NTFP potential for conservation is widely discussed in the literature.
