O objetivo do presente estudo foi verificar a ocorrência e severidade de fluorose dentária em adolescentes do Itapoã-DF, área considerada de vulnerabilidade social. Essa região tem sido beneficiada por água de abastecimento fluoretada por aproximadamente 14 anos. A pesquisa faz parte do estudo Incidência e Progressão de cárie Oclusal em Adolescentes - Fatores de Risco, aprovado pelo Comitê de Ética em Pesquisa com Seres Humanos da FS da UnB (registro: 1.096.882). Os responsáveis legais e estudantes assinaram respectivamente, Termos de Consentimento e Assentimento Livre e Esclarecido concordando com a participação na pesquisa. A amostra constou de 618 adolescentes de 10 a 15 anos de idade, que em sua quase totalidade foram beneficiados pelo flúor, pois nasceram em áreas cuja concentração variava de 0,6mg a 1mg/L (CAESB,2012). Previamente ao exame dentário os estudantes tiveram seus dentes limpos por meio de escovação profissional e na sequencia o diagnóstico de fluorose foi realizado por única examinadora, calibrada, empregando luz artificial e secagem das superfícies dentárias. Foi usado o índice TF (1978) para registrar presença e severidade da fluorose nas superfícies vestibulares dos dentes. Reprodutibilidade intra-examinador foi realizada comparando scores dos exames clínicos com os verificados por meio de avaliação de fotografias intra-bucais dos mesmos 50 adolescentes participantes (k=0,85, 95% IC 0.74-0.96, Kappa ponderado). A ocorrência de fluorose dentária foi de 48,5%, sendo que a maioria dos casos correspondia a graus que variavam de muito leves a leves: TF-1 (32,7%), TF-2 (13,6%). Graus moderados de fluorose dentária se restringiram a TF-3 (1,3%) e TF-4 e TF-5 (1%). The aim of the present study was to assess the prevalence and severity of dental fluorosis in adolescents of Itapoã–Federal District of Brazil, considered a poor and disadvantaged area. The region has been supplied by fluoridated water for almost 14 years. This research is part of the study “ Incidence and Progression of Occlusal Caries in Adolescents - Risk factors”, approved by the Ethical Committee of the University of Brasília, Brazil (Brazilian register number 1.096.882). The legal responsible, parents or not, and students sign, respectively, Informed Consent and Informed Assent Terms according to participation in the research. The sample consisted of 618 adolescents 10 to 15 years old and the majority was benefited by fluoride because they were born in fluoridated areas where the fluoride concentration ranged from 0,6mg to 1mg/L. Prior to the dental examination for fluorosis, the students received professional tooth brushing. The diagnosis was performed by one examiner, calibrated, employing artificial light and drying procedure on the dental surfaces. The TF-index (1978) was used to register the presence and severity of fluorosis in the buccal surfaces of the teeth. Intra-examiner reproducibility was performed by comparing the scores of the clinical examination with those obtained from examination of pictures taken of 50 adolescents with or without fluorosis (k=0.85, 95% IC 0.74-0.96, weighted Kappa). The frequency of dental fluorosis was 48.5% and the degrees of severity ranged from very mild to mild: TF-1 (32,7%), TF-2 (13,6%).
