Resumo: The purpose of this paper is to present the principles and implications of the Cognitive chain-reaction theory in foreign language learning/acquisitions (Fernandes-Boëchat 2000). The principles underlying this cognitive theory are related to what occurs in the learner’s mind, at an unconscious level, as far as starting to learn a second, third or more is concerned. The cognitive theory proves that each new foreign language learning experience or process is linked, unconsciously, to the learner’s preceding foreign language. In the light of the neuro psycholinguistic findings, learners understand one of the main causes for their difficulties and instead of dropping out of foreign language courses they are motivated to succeed in, they are willing to give it another try.
