Resumo: A questionnaire based on health belief models and thetheory of planned action was answered by 178 women, on theirknowledge and practice of breast self-exam. (BSE). Results show a good level of knowledge about general health care and BSE. Beliefs aboutdoing BSE were favorable, but laziness, personal worries andforgetfulness were presented as the main barriers to its regular practice.Among the variables of the planned action model two of them influencedthe intention of performing BSE; the opinions of relevant others and theexperience of prior practice, explaining 24% of the variance in thebehavioral intention. The women were then separated in two groups, onthe basis of their practice of BSE. For the practicing group, the opinions ofothers, the perception of control over the behavior and their confidence inperforming the BSE explained 36% of the obtained variance. For the groupof non performers, 28% of the variance was explained by a lowereducacional level and the opinions of relevant others.
