PARTNERSHIP AND SEXUALITY IN CONTEMPORARY MARRIAGE AND REMARRIAGE

Resumo: The aim of this research is to evaluate the role ofsexuality versus partnership in contemporary marriage. Twogroups of married couples are distinguished: (1) couples who havebeen married for the first time; and (2) couples who had beenpreviously married. Each group is composed of 10 couples whichare defined according to the following characteristics: middleclass,living in Rio de Janeiro, age range between 25 and 45 years,marriage lasting from 3 to 13 year, number of children from 1 to 4. Asemi-structured interview was made with each couple. The resultsof these interviews indicate that there is an important difference in the role which is attached to sexuality versus partnership betweenthe couples of first marriage and those of subsequent marriages.The main aspects of such difference are analysed. Such conclusionshave relevant implications for couple therapy in both cases.

Such conclusionshave relevant implications for couple therapy in both cases.RESUMO - Com o objetivo de verificar como se manifestam as dimensões de aliança e sexualidade em casais de primeiro casamento e em casais recasados, realizamos um estudo empírico com dois grupos de casais da classe média carioca: 10 casais de primeiro casamento e 10 de casamentos subseqüentes, com idade variando de 25 a 45 anos, tempo de vida conjugal de 3 a 13 anos e número de filhos de 1 a 4. Os dados foram levantados através de uma entrevista semi-estruturada elaborada a partir da delimitação dos conceitos de aliança e sexualidade, realizada conjuntamente com ambos os membros do casal. O estudo permite concluir que aliança e sexualidade se manifestam de forma diferente em casais de primeiro casamento e em casais recasados e ressalta as principais diferenças na manifestação destas dimensões na vida conjugal dos dois grupos de casais.
