THE SOCIALIZATION OF CHILDREN IN LOWER CLASS FAMILIES

Resumo: This qualitative study describes the child rearing pratices inpoor social class families that live in a big urban city in Brasil (Porto Alegre,RS). Data gathering was done first with three families, with differentfamilial structure, using participant observation and interview for this partof the study. Based on this data, a questionnaire was organized and wasused in the interviews with 30 families; twelve nuclear, eleven extensive and seven one single parent. The data analysis involved the search of similaritiesand differences intra and inter familial groups, a synthesis of thethree types of the familial groups as well as a description of the majorthemes that emerged in the family dynamics of these families. The resultsshow that there are no relevant differences in the socialization practices inthe three types of familial structures and the woman is always the primarycaretaker of the minors. In the discipline practices there is a predominancyof physical punishment and the restriction of autonomy. As far as sexualroles, it is evident the sexual stereotype and sexual taboo. It is verynoticeable the aspiration of formal education and college degree for thechildren. The affective relationship is warm in the vast majority of cases.Television and radio are the main options of leisure. A few recomendationsfor future research and for pedagogical practices are made.

A few recomendationsfor future research and for pedagogical practices are made.RESUMO - Este estudo qualitativo descreve as práticas de socialização de famílias de classe popular que vivem num grande e representativo centro urbano brasileiro (Porto Alegre, RS). A coleta de dados realizou-se primeiramente através de um estudo de três famílias, com diferentes estruturas familiares, empregando-se a observação participante e a entrevista. Com base nestes dados organizou-se um questionário utilizado para entrevistar 30 famílias: doze do tipo nuclear, onze do tipo extensivo e sete do tipo pai ausente. A análise dos dados envolveu a busca de semelhanças e diferenças intra e inter-grupos familiares, a síntese dos três tipos de estrutura familiares, bem como a descrição dos temas mais relevantes. Os resultados indicam que não há diferenças relevantes nas práticas de socialização dos três tipos de estrutura familiar, sendo que a mulher é sempre a principal responsável pela educação dos menores. Nas práticas disciplinares aparece o predomínio da punição física e da restrição da autonomia. Quanto aos papéis sexuais, é evidente a estereotipia sexual e os tabus em relação ao sexo. É bem presente a aspiração de educação formal e estudos de terceiro grau para as crianças. O relacionamento afetivo é caloroso na maioria dos casos estudados. A televisão e o rádio são as principais opções de lazer.
