The fissile house: the migrant body and the paradoxes of hospitality in the poetry of Eduardo Jorge

Resumo: If the home is the geographic center from which all paths are possible and where the city offers itself up to the individual, then the migrant's experience often alters the perception of this “chez soi” and weakens its opposition to open and shared public spaces. Hospitality can become hostility. This article seeks to examine the instabilities in the representation of domestic space in the recent work of the Brazilian poet Eduardo Jorge.  Given his temporary condition ”“ changing addresses, precariously dominating the city and its codes ”“ the migrant portrayed in this poetry often experiences home as reduced to the dimensions of clothing (the most basic form of shelter) and of the body, himself transformed into shell, fossil, elastic, and fissile space.

La hospitalidad puede convertirse en hostilidad. Este artículo examina los sismos en la representación del espacio doméstico en el trabajo reciente del poeta brasileño Eduardo Jorge. Viviendo en un régimen temporal, cambiando de domicilio, dominando precariamente la ciudad y sus códigos, el migrante retratado en esta poesía a menudo siente que la casa se reduce al tamaño de la ropa (la forma más elemental de refugio) y el cuerpo, convirtiéndose en concha, espacio divisible, fósil, elástico.Se a casa é o centro geográfico a partir do qual os caminhos se abrem e a cidade se oferece, frequentemente a vivência do migrante altera a percepção desse “chez soi” e enfraquece sua oposição aos espaços públicos, abertos, compartilhados. A hospitalidade pode tornar-se hostilidade. O presente artigo busca examinar os abalos na representação do espaço doméstico na obra recente do poeta brasileiro Eduardo Jorge.
