The abstract as a tool for retrieving information in library catalogs

Resumo: The discovery of informational resources is related to the way they are indexed and being a natural language indexing tool, the abstract enhances this recovery. From this context, the present research had the objective of verifying if the libraries of federal institutions of higher education use the abstract as an indexing instrument. The methodology used consisted of a documentary research carried out in online catalogs using the following search terms: literature, Brazilian literature, health, mathematics, monograph, dissertation and thesis. At least five records retrieved for each search term were analyzed, observing the existence of field 520 of the MARC 21 Format for bibliographic data, which refers to the summary note. In the results, it was identified that of the one hundred and sixteen institutions analyzed, only seven present the abstract for all the materials researched and another four did not have the catalog available for search. It was concluded that the abstract, as an information retrieval tool, is little used in the libraries of federal higher education institutions. It refers to the need for discussion about the technical treatment of material information and the insertion of the abstract as a natural language indexing tool.

Desde este contexto, la presente investigación tuvo como objetivo verificar si las bibliotecas de las instituciones federales de educación superior utilizan el resumen como instrumento de indexación. La metodología utilizada consistió en una investigación documental realizada en catálogos en línea utilizando los siguientes términos de búsqueda: literatura, literatura brasileña, salud, matemáticas, monografía, disertación y tesis. Se analizaron al menos cinco registros recuperados para cada término de búsqueda, notándose la existencia del campo 520 del Formato MARC 21 para datos bibliográficos, que se refiere a la nota resumen. En los resultados se identificó que, de las ciento dieciséis instituciones analizadas, solo siete presentan el resumen de todos los materiales investigados y otras cuatro no tenían el catálogo disponible para la búsqueda. Se concluyó que el resumen, como herramienta de recuperación de información, se usa poco en las bibliotecas de las instituciones federales de educación superior. Se refiere a la necesidad de discusión sobre el tratamiento técnico de la información material y la inserción del resumen como herramienta de indexación en lenguaje natural.A descoberta de recursos informacionais está relacionada com a forma com que são indexados e, sendo um instrumento de indexação por linguagem natural, o resumo potencializa essa recuperação. Partindo deste contexto, a presente pesquisa possuiu o objetivo de verificar se as bibliotecas das instituições federais de ensino superior utilizam o resumo como instrumento de indexação. A metodologia utilizada consistiu em uma pesquisa documental realizada nos catálogos online utilizando os seguintes termos de busca: literatura, literatura brasileira, saúde, matemática, monografia, dissertação e tese. Analisou-se, no mínimo, cinco registros recuperados para cada termo de busca, observando a existência do campo 520 do Formato MARC 21 para dados bibliográficos, o qual é referente a nota de resumo. Nos resultados, identificou-se que das cento e dezesseis instituições analisadas apenas sete apresentam o resumo para todos os materiais pesquisados e outras quatro não possuíam o catálogo disponível para busca. Concluiu-se que o resumo, enquanto instrumento de recuperação da informação, é pouco empregado nas bibliotecas das instituições federais de ensino superior.
