Civil registry as an object of study for knowledge organization

The Offices of Vital Statistics function as a mechanism for social surveying and categorization. In the practice of their functions, they settle facts and ensure rights, in addition to contributing to the development of public policy proposals. From the Information Science perspective, they become similar to those Knowledge Organization Systems that help in the understanding of a certain domain and its contexts through their instruments, such as the thesaurus. In order to verify the contributions of KOSs to the Civil Registry, a bibliographic survey was conducted at BENANCIB and BRAPCI as a means to quantify what kind of research has already been carried out on the subject. In an effort to promote conversation and new reflections, an analysis of the Birth Certificate and the terms that reference to women in the Thesaurus for Gender and Women Studies and in the Legal Thesaurus of the Superior Court of Justice was made. The results involving the Offices of Vital Statistics in Information Science demonstrate that there is a field to be explored. With regard to the KO, they indicate that the contributions are fruitful, as they demonstrate the socio-historical instances expressed in the documents.
