Resumo: The study of a shanty-town community is the departure point of a discussionon theoretical approaches to the identity of collective subjects, social movementsand participation. After examining the marxist and culturalist perspectivesas well as participating observation methodologies (the perspective of thesubjects involved), the author concludes in favor of the possibility of conceivingthe subject t*ahse result of conflicts in a historical construction not determinedby a causal relation.

Aprés avoir examiné les perspectivesmarxiste et culturaliste et la méthode de la recherche participative (laperspective des sujets), I’auteur conclue sur la possibilité de concevoir le sujeten tant que résultat de luttes, dans une construction historique non déterminéepar un rapport de causalité.O estudo de uma comunidade favelada é o ponto de partida para umadiscussão a respeito de abordagens teóricas da identidade do sujeito coletivo,movimentos sociais e participação.
