Resumo: | Under external influences, liberal discourse returns among us, seducinghearts and minds. The problem, however, is still that of situating liberalism withinBrazilian social thought and, particularly, in the ideology of brazilian elites. In Europe,liberal criticism was aimed at excessive power in democracy. And in Brazil?Among us, in the tradition of “ideas out of place”, it appears as a congenitalvice: that of an evident gap betwwen the importance attributed to discussionsabout the role of the State and the market in the organization of national economy,on the one side, and the disinterest regarding the process, now in coursein this country, of strengthening democratic institutions, on the other. |

Reste toujours le problème de situer le libéralismedans la pensée sociale brésilienne et, surtout, dans 1’idéologie de nos élites.En Europe, la cible principale de la critique libérale, qui lui prêta consistence etplénitude, fut 1’excès de pouvoir dans la démocratie. Et au Brésil? Chez nous,dans la tradition de “l’idée déplacée”, le libéralisme se manifeste comme um vicegénétique: celui d’un fossé ente 1’importance attribuée aux débats sur le rôle deI’Etat et du marché pour 1’organization de 1’économie nationale, d’un côté, et del’indifférence à 1’égard du processus en cours, au Brésil, de consolidation desinstitutions démocratiques, de 1'autre.Sob influxo externo, o discurso liberal volta entre nós a seduzir mentes ecativar corações. Mantém-se como problema, no entanto, a questão do lugar doliberalismo no pensamento social brasileiro e, sobretudo, no ideário das elitesbrasileiras. Na Europa, o alvo principal da critica liberal, que lhe deu consistênciae plenitude, foi o excesso de poder na democracia. E no Brasil?
