Resumo: The article discusses, from a historical perspective, the transformations which have ocurred in the city of Lisbon in the last three decades. The author focuses on the analysis of urban policies in that period of modernization of the capital, within the context of redemocratization and of the integration of Portugal in the European Union. Each decade contributed to the preservation of the historical physiognomy of the city and to the renewal of the street network and communication infrastructure, the high point of which was the new Vasco da Gama Bridge. The urban tissue at the center and the periphery was embellished and modernized. This work became a paradigm for urban renovation in Portugal as a whole.

Chaque décennie a contribué à préserver la physiognomic historique de la ville et à renouveller le réseau des rues et I’infrastructure des communications (comme par exemple le nouveau pont Vasco da Gama). Les embellissements urbains successifs dans le centre et la périphérie on fait de Lisbonne um modéle pour les projets de rénovation urbaine de I 'ensemble du Portugal.O artigo discute, a partir de uma perspectiva sócio- histórica, as transformações ocorridas na cidade de Lisboa, detendo-se no exame das políticas urbanas implantadas nas três últimas décadas, quando se dá a modernização da capital, tendo em vista a redemocratização e a integração de Portugal na União Européia.
