Resumo: Two different approaches divide the working time theory: the utility value and the labor value matrices. The paper provides a synthesis of both perspectives, which originate in the writings of classical authors of the 19th century. The theory is reformulated with the introduction of the concept of social praxis as a means to interpret the process of formation of a normal working time. Some elements of today’s flexibility praxis are analysed, among them, the passage from open conflict to concertation in the relationship between classes, the introduction of flexibility in the distribution of time and the intensification of the working process.

L’éssai fait une synthèse des deux perspectives, que ont leur origine à la pensée des auteurs classiques du XIX siècle. La théorie est reformulée avec le concept de praxis sociale, une médiation pour interpreter les procès de formation de la joumée normale du travail. Des eléments de la praxis contemporaine de la flexibilité sont analisés, entre eux le passage du conflit à la concertation dans les relations entre classes, la fléxibilisation des temps et 1’intensification du processus du travail.Duas vertentes básicas diferenciam a teoria do tempo de trabalho: a matriz do valor-utilidade e a matriz do valor-trabalho. Sintetizo as duas perspectivas, que remontam aos autores clássicos do século XIX. Atualizo a teoria introduzindo o conceito de práxis social para dar conta do processo de formação de uma jornada normal de trabalho.
