Os suportes teóricometodológicos foram construídos a partir da epistemologia feminista, da nova história cultural e de algumas contribuições de Michel de Foucault. Com a constituição do Estado Republicano, o Brasil procurou implantar um projeto de progresso e emancipação da sociedade fundamentado nos princípios da modernidade, que reforçavam o valor das liberdades individuais e do direito universal. A família conjugal, legalmente constituída pelo matrimônio burguês, ganhou centralidade neste projeto. Ela foi percebida como lugar estratégico para instituir o controle e a disciplina na vida cotidiana, a sexualidade reprodutiva e para a produção de modelos de homens e mulheres marcados pelas diferenças de gênero. As celibatárias emergiram como figuras marginais quando esse modelo de família tornou-se central. A solteirona foi a chave para perceber processos de subjetivação feminina e a constituição de um dispositivo de controle e coerção sobre as mulheres na modernidade brasileira, para assegurar a família, a conjugalidade moderna e a sexualidade reprodutiva. Os mecanismos de controle se engendraram, sobretudo, por meio do casamento legítimo, por isso, fora do casamento as celibatárias poderiam experimentar uma vida mais autônoma, constituir-se em indivíduos jurídicos e aderir, sem impedimentos legais, ao mercado de trabalho. Os mecanismos de coerção foram acionados para convencer as mulheres a se tornarem esposas, pois nesta condição elas poderiam ser mais facilmente controladas. Duas estratégias discursivas foram usadas. Uma foi a produção da idéia de que o casamento, além de uma vocação inata, trazia privilégios às mulheres; a outra foi a invenção da solteirona invejosa e frustrada, a figura da diferença, uma personalidade doentia. Com o discurso científico-moral, ela ganhou corpo e se apresentou como uma anomalia e marca dos fracassos femininos. Por isso, era um fantasma que aterrorizava as mulheres e as coagia ao casamento. Ao não se casar, rejeitando os papéis de mãe e esposa, muitas celibatárias, porém, criaram condições de possibilidades para exceder seu assujeitamento como mãe/esposa/dona-de-casa. O celibato feminino, neste contexto, foi ser pensado como um dos múltiplos pontos de resistência aos modelos idealizados de família, de casamento, de sexualidade e de mulher. __________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACTThis thesis discussed the emergency of the stigmatized feminine celibacy and of the spinster in Brazil by means of analysis of scientific and literary discourses disseminated in the state of Minas Gerais, from 1890 to 1948. The theoretical-methodological support was built from the feminist epistemology, from the new cultural history and from some contribution by Michel de Foucault. With the constitution of the Republican State, Brazil endeavored to implant a project of progress and emancipation of the society based on the principles of modernity, which reinforced the value of the individual liberties and the universal right. The conjugal family, legally constituted by the bourgeois matrimony, gained centrality in this project. It was perceived as a strategic place for the institution of control and discipline to quotidian life, reproductive sexuality and for the production of models of men and women marked by gender differences. Celibate women emerged as marginal figures when this family model became central. The spinster was the key for making perceptible both the feminine subjection process and the constitution of a device of control and coercion over women in Brazilian modernity, in order to assure family, modern conjugality and reproductive sexuality. The mechanisms of control were engendered, above all, by means of a legitimate marriage, thus, out of marriage, celibate women were able to experiment a more autonomous life, to constitute themselves as juridical individuals and adhere, without legal impediments, to the work market. The mechanisms of coercion were set in motion in order to convince women to become wives, therefore, under this condition, they could be more easily controlled. Two discursive strategies were used. One of them was the production of the idea that marriage, besides being an innate vocation, brought privileges to women; the other one was the invention of the envious and frustrated spinster, the figure of difference, an unhealthy personality. With the scientific-moral discourse, it became stronger and was presented as an anomaly and mark of feminine failures. Hence, it was a ghost which used to scare women and constrained them to get married. When they did not get married, then rejecting the roles of mother and wife, many celibate women, nevertheless, established conditions of possibilities to exceed their subjection as a mother/spouse/housewife.
