Isto pode resultar no benefício econômico da redução de custos de combustíveis, quando comparada à produção das utilidades em separado, e também em benefícios ambientais como a redução de emissões de poluentes decorrentes da queima de combustíveis. Entretanto a viabilidade de um empreendimento de cogeração depende também de outros fatores, tais como o preço da eletricidade, do combustível e a liquidez da venda de excedentes elétricos. Por isso a decisão do investidor deverá ser amparada numa análise que envolva a tecnologia empregada, o benefício econômico e a estratégia de atuação no mercado de eletricidade. Pretende-se com este trabalho fazer uma abordagem sistêmica dos aspectos tecnológicos, econômicos e legais, de forma a consolidar a visão atual do empreendimento de cogeração como parte intrínseca do sistema elétrico nacional, em suas várias vertentes. _________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACTCogeneration, or Combined Heat and Power (CHP), is the simultaneous production of electrical energy and useful thermal energy from a single energy source. Cogeneration is economical, environmentally friendly, and reliable. It can result in cost savings by reducing fuel costs to produce heat and electricity separately. It can also result in reduced emissions of air pollutants into the atmosphere and other environmental benefits such as eliminating wastes. Other factors that enter into a decision to install cogeneration facilities include the price of electricity, the cost of fuel, and the ability to sell excess electricity to other customers. Persons considering the installation of cogeneration facilities should determine the status of government deregulation of the utility industry, the price of natural gas or other fuels, the existence of government incentives for cogeneration, and other developments in the energy area. Although cogeneration is continuing to be recognized for its far-reaching energy-conservation, environmental and economic benefits, there has been no method developed for calculating the exact economic value of these external impacts. Additionally, it has not been determined which stakeholders among the end-user, the electricity utility or society as a whole would reap these externality benefits.
