Inicialmente, são revisadas as principais teorias que tratam da intermediação financeira. Em seguida, são realizados três ensaios de caráter empírico. No primeiro deles, as relações envolvendo o sistema financeiro e as taxas de poupança e investimento são investigadas no período entre 1947 e 2004 com a finalidade de verificar se as mudanças ocorridas na atuação e estrutura do setor financeiro nacional implicaram em diferentes relações ao longo do tempo. O segundo ensaio analisa o financiamento do investimento sob a perspectiva do canal de crédito e busca evidências, para o período entre 1995 e 2005, quanto a uma possível participação do crédito bancário no seu financiamento. No terceiro ensaio, as decisões de investimento no nível das empresas do setor produtivo nacional são investigadas com ênfase no papel exercido pela disponibilidade de recursos financeiros internos. Para o período 1996 e 2005, buscam-se evidências sobre os motivos que levaram as empresas ao uso do autofinanciamento. ________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACTThis study attempts to investigate some questions related to the connections between investment and finance in Brazilian economy. First, we present the main theories related to financial intermediation. Then, three empirical essays are developed in the following chapters. The first essay examines the relations among financial system and the rates of saving and investment for the period 1947 – 2004. Here we investigate if those relations were characterized by different regimes related to changes in financial system’s activity and structure. The second essay investigates the empirical link between investment and finance under the credit channel view. For the period 1995 – 2005, we try to find some evidence about the role of bank loans in financing investment. In the third essay we investigate investment decisions at firm level trying to find some aspects about the important role of internal funds in financing investment.
