Economic integration and development in Paraná: an input-output approach

Resumo: This study aimed to analyze the productive structure of Paraná through the indicators of an input-output matrix, focusing on Paraná's inter-regional relations with the South and with the rest of Brazil. For this, a matrix with 68 sectors was used, calibrated for 2011. The results indicate that the lumber, chemical and oil activities are the most relevant for the economy of Paraná. To a lesser extent, agricultural, sugar, cellulose and other food activities also stand out. No relevant differences were found in Paraná in relation to the Brazilian and the southern average structure regarding the intra-regional component of the multipliers, and the value of the sectors' backward linkage indexes. However, with respect to forward linkages, Paraná's oil, timber, agriculture, and other food sectors showed much stronger linkages than the national average, while the oil, timber, and sugar sectors have much higher forward linkages than the southern average. Keywords: regional economics; Paraná; input-output matrix.Este estudio tuvo como objetivo analizar la estructura productiva de Paraná a través de los indicadores de una matriz de insumo-producto, enfocándose en las relaciones interregionales entre Paraná y el Sur y el resto de Brasil. Para ello, se utilizó una matriz con 68 sectores, calibrada para 2011. Los resultados indican que las actividades madereras, químicas y petroleras son las más relevantes para la economía de Paraná. En menor medida también se destacaron productos agrícolas, azucareros, celulósicos y otros alimentos. En Paraná no se encontraron diferencias relevantes en relación a la estructura promedio brasileña y del Sur en cuanto al componente intrarregional de los multiplicadores y los valores de los índices de vinculación hacia atrás de los sectores. Sin embargo, en relación con los vínculos hacia adelante, los sectores de petróleo, madera, agricultura y otros alimentos de Paraná tenían vínculos mucho más fuertes que el promedio nacional, mientras que los sectores del petróleo, la madera y el azúcar tienen vínculos hacia adelante mucho mayores que el promedio del Sur. Palavras clave: economía regional; Paraná; matriz de insumo-producto.Este estudo teve por objetivo analisar a estrutura produtiva do Paraná por meio dos indicadores de uma matriz de insumo-produto, com enfoque sobre as relações inter-regionais paranaenses com o Sul e com o restante do Brasil. Para tanto, foi usada uma matriz com 68 setores, calibrada para 2011. Os resultados indicam que as atividades madeireira, química e petrolífera são as mais relevantes para a economia paranaense. Em menor grau, destacaram-se também as atividades agrícola, açucareira, de celulose e de outros produtos alimentares. Não foram encontradas diferenças relevantes no Paraná em relação à estrutura média brasileira e sulista no que tange ao componente intrarregional dos multiplicadores, e aos valores dos índices de encadeamento para trás dos setores. Contudo, em relação aos encadeamentos para frente, os setores paranaenses petrolífero, madeireiro, agrícola e de outros produtos alimentares apresentaram ligações muito mais fortes do que a média nacional, enquanto os setores petrolífero, madeireiro e açucareiro possuem encadeamentos para frente muito maiores do que a média sulista.
