Resumo: The aim of this article is to analyze the dynamics of spatial patterns in the territory of Rio Grande do Sul, with the purpose of explaining how the development question in this state, its peculiarities, causes and unfolding behaves. The study uses the data of the IDHM and its three dimensions: income, longevity and education and makes a comparison between the years 2000 and 2010. It is also analyzed how public spending on health and education are associated with the well-being of society. It is noticed that the best indexes are concentrated in the northern and metropolitan regions of the state in both 2000 and 2010, evidencing the inequality in the spatial distribution of the MHDI. In addition, it has been found that there is a positive relationship between the MHDI and per capita expenditures on health and sanitation and education and culture. Key-Words: IDHM. Development. Desenvolvimento. Rio Grande do Sul.
