THE ROLE OF URBAN MORPHOLOGY IN THE MICROCLIMATE IN A SEMI-ARID CLIMATE CITY

Resumo: | The urbanization process of cities conforms to a typically urban climate, most of the time characterized by the loss of quality of life due to climatic phenomena, such as urban heat islands. The adaptation of the urban form to the local climatic conditions has the potential to compose a sustainable urban environment, with thermal comfort in the open air. The present work took the city of Arapiraca/AL, in order to analyze the relationship between urban morphology and microclimate. From an analytical approach using the ENVI-met software for computer simulation, it was possible to compose four hypothetical models for the hot and dry period. The base model starts from a fraction of the city with a tendency to verticalization, the others vary according to: thermodynamic properties of materials, canyon geometry and vegetation. The results indicated significant thermal effects on urban morphology. The presence of high albedo materials promoted a decrease in air temperature. The orientation of the roads and the geometry of the urban canyon determined the solar access, the number of hours of exposure to direct solar radiation and the use of the winds. The presence of vegetation presented the potential to favor the thermal conditions of the microclimate. It is evident, therefore, the need to insert the study on the urban climate in the urban planning process of cities, in order to promote quality of life for its inhabitants. |

La adaptación de la forma urbana a las condiciones climáticas locales tiene el potencial de componer un entorno urbano sostenible, con confort térmico al aire libre. El presente trabajo tomó la ciudad de Arapiraca/AL, con el fin de analizar la relación entre la morfología urbana y el microclima. A partir de un enfoque analítico utilizando el software ENVI-met para simulación por computadora, fue posible componer cuatro modelos hipotéticos para el período cálido y seco. El modelo base parte de una fracción de la ciudad con tendencia a la verticalización, los demás varían según: propiedades termodinámicas de los materiales, geometría del cañón y vegetación. Los resultados indicaron efectos térmicos significativos en la morfología urbana. La presencia de materiales de alto albedo promovió una disminución de la temperatura del aire. La orientación de las vías y la geometría del cañón urbano determinaron el acceso solar, el número de horas de exposición a la radiación solar directa y el aprovechamiento de los vientos. La presencia de vegetación presentó potencial para favorecer las condiciones térmicas del microclima. Se evidencia, por tanto, la necesidad de insertar el estudio del clima urbano en el proceso de planificación urbana de las ciudades, con el fin de promover la calidad de vida de sus habitantes.O processo de urbanização das cidades conforma um clima tipicamente urbano, na maioria das vezes caracterizado pela perda da qualidade de vida em função de fenômenos climáticos, como as ilhas de calor urbano. O presente trabalho tomou a cidade de Arapiraca/ AL, a fim de analisar a relação entre morfologia urbana e microclima. A partir de uma abordagem analítica com uso do software ENVI-met para simulação computacional foi possível compor quatro modelos hipotéticos para o período quente e seco. A orientação das vias e a geometria do cânion urbano determinaram o acesso solar, a quantidade de horas de exposição à radiação solar direta e o aproveitamento dos ventos. A presença de vegetação apresentou o potencial de favorecer às condições térmicas do microclima. Evidencia-se, portanto, a necessidade da inserção do estudo no clima urbano no processo de planejamento urbano das cidades, a fim de promover qualidade de vida a seus habitantes.
