Resumo: ABSTRACT: Depression is a frequent mental disorder that can cause great suffering and affect performance in daily activities. Tryptophan, an essential amino acid and precursor to serotonin, has been associated with the development of depression. The objective was to analyze the relationship between components from the diet and the appearance of depressive symptoms. An integrative literature review was carried out in the SciElo, LILACS, Medline and PubMed databases, with the following descriptors: serotonin, 5-HT, 5-hydroxytryptamine, tryptophan, depression and depressive symptoms. The search was carried out between 2019 and 2020. The selection was made by two reviewers based on screening by title, reading abstracts and reading the full text. Original and complete articles were included, without specifying the year of publication or language, and review papers were excluded. Of the 4,141 articles found, 11 were selected, of which it was possible to identify 5 groups of diet components that are related to depression: carbohydrates, vitamins, fats, foods that interfere with the synthesis of serotonin and proteins. These were published between the years 1998 and 2020. Evidence was found that ingesting tryptophan interferes with serotonin levels in the brain. This fact depends on the amount of food eaten rich in this amino acid and others. However, the studies are controversial and it has not yet been possible to establish such associations clearly, requiring research on this topic. KEYWORDS: Serotonin, tryptophan, depression.
