"Dictatorships can back, you should know":: past and present in Julián Fuks

Based on the reflections by Jeanne Marie Gagnebin (2009) in “What does it mean to elaborate the past?”, this text proposes a discussion around the writing process thematized in the novel A resistência, published by Julián Fuks in 2015. Writing is seen as an active remembrance work, in which the past is resumed not only as a way of not forgetting, but also as an understanding of the present, with a view to the transformations and permanence of the systems of domination. The aim of this article is to problematize how, in the narrative, the composition of a writer belonging to the generation after the one that was effectively persecuted by the military regime allows the observation of overlapping times – the military dictatorship that, in the past, persecuted his parents; the gaps that, in the present of the narration, characterize the relationship with the adopted brother –, –, mobilizing strategies that materialize what Fuks (2017b) defines, in the essay “Post-fiction”, as a way of facing the repression of the History.
