Resumo: | The novella Fascinação, by Hélia Correia, questions the permanence of social and religious oppression regarding female behavior through a dialogue with the stories about Dama Pé de Cabra, a unique and fabulous character from the medieval lineagist story about D. Diogo Lopes de Haro, recorded in the Livro de Linhagens do Conde D. Pedro (1344), and from Alexandre Herculano’s homonymous short story, published in the collection Lendas e Narrativas in 1843. The sensitive story of the daughter of the Dama and D. Diogo, D. Sol, a hybrid creature, fruit of an in-between place produced by religious syncretism, allows the narrator to discuss instigating questions about the female condition still present in contemporary society: the oppression exerted by social expectations and moral interdictions, the fascination aroused by desire and transgression, as well as the challenges arising from the condition of being different. This analysis pairs with the perspective of dialogic relations between texts and contexts to outline aesthetic, symbolic, and sociocultural concerns, leaning on studies by Praz (1996) concerning the fascination aroused by the medusa-like beauty due to the subversive danger attributed to these female figures, by Bourdieu (2007) on the symbolic oppression exerted by society on individuals, by Hutcheon (1991) related to the attribution of voice to the excluded in contemporary narratives, and by Reis (2019) regarding the refiguration of characters.
