Resumo: We present, in this paper, the results of a survey on the challenges related to academic Portuguese that impact the permanence of Munduruku and Wai Wai undergraduates at the Federal University of Western Pará, as well as the strategies they use/used to overcome such problems in order to meet the literacy practices required in the university environment. The data that based the description and reflection on the subject was obtained through interviews with four students from each group. The analysis of the content of their speeches shows that, in addition to being speakers of their mother tongues, they are fluent in Portuguese, but show difficulties when interacting with academic Portuguese. Despite this, they are driven, resilient and active: they adopt several alternatives to stay at the university and point out actions that the institution could adopt to improve their communicative interaction.
