INDIGENOUS PEOPLES AND ADULT EDUCATION: HISTORICAL PATHWAYS THAT LEFT MARKS

Resumo: | The discussions and studies presented in this article are preliminary surveys of our research. Indigenous peoples, inhabitants who were already in the territory we now call Brazil before the arrival of European colonizers, were unable to prevent the catechization and acculturation promoted in this cultural, social, and linguistic clash. In this sense, according to the researched theorists, Alves (2020); Deleuze and Guattari (1980); Oliveira and Carvalho (2005); Ribeiro (2021); Silva (2019); Souza (2018); and Krenak (2012), among others, we observe the origin of Youth and Adult Education (YAE). The Jesuits who arrived with the Portuguese in the 16th century began to promote this Catholic-based “education” for indigenous children and young people. It was one of the ways the Portuguese found to expand the overseas territory. Based on the researched sources, we were able to ascertain how much indigenous peoples still contribute with their cultures and ways of being and thinking towards a fairer world, even while coexisting with a multiplicity of cultures within Brazilian society. |

Os povos indígenas, habitantes que já estavam no território que hoje chamamos de Brasil, antes da chegada dos colonizadores europeus, não conseguiram evitar a catequização e a aculturação promovida nesse embate cultural, social e linguístico. Nesse sentido, segundo os teóricos pesquisados, Alves (2020); Deleuze e Guattari (1980); Oliveira e Carvalho (2005); Ribeiro (2021); Silva (2019); Souza (2018) e Krenak (2012); dentre outros, constatamos a origem da Educação de Jovens e Adultos (EJA). Os jesuítas que chegaram com os portugueses, a partir do século XVI, começaram a promover essa “educação” de cunho católico, pacificador, para as crianças e também os jovens indígenas. Foi uma das formas que os portugueses encontraram para expandir o território além-mar. Diante das fontes pesquisadas, pudemos constatar o quanto os povos indígenas ainda contribuem com suas culturas e modos de ser e pensar mundos mais justos, mesmo convivendo com uma multiplicidade de culturas que é a sociedade brasileira.
