Knotless Ties: market, rationality and religious adhesion based on Mark Granovetter’s theory

Summary: | In recent decades, the sociology of religion has questioned one of its central foundations: the secularization paradigm. The persistence of religiously oriented social movements around the world, including in Europe, seemed to point to the obsolescence of research programs which were based on any version of the secularization theory. Thus, American researchers have rehearsed, since the beginning of the 1980s, a leap out not only of the secularization paradigm, but of sociological theory. The program of studies inaugurated by Stark and Bainbridge aimed precisely at overcoming what they called the “old paradigm”, replacing it with a “new paradigm” based on economic and rational choice theories. In this sense, this article proposes reflections on the limits of the conceptions of the rational choice of religion theory, recovering fundamental propositions from authors of economic sociology, especially Granovetter. It is discussed that the assumptions of economic sociology can consistently contribute to the issues surrounding choice and the religious market, without denying the sociological tradition,though. |

La persistencia de movimientos sociales de orientación religiosa en todo el mundo, incluso en Europa, parecía apuntar a la obsolescencia de los programas de investigación que se basaban en cualquier versión de la teoría de la secularización. En esta línea, los investigadores estadounidenses han ensayado, desde principios de la década de 1980, un salto no solo del paradigma de la secularización, sino de la teoría sociológica. El programa de estudios inaugurado por Stark y Bainbridge apuntaba precisamente a superar lo que llamaron el “viejo paradigma”, reemplazándolo por un “nuevo paradigma” basado en teorías económicas y de elección racional. En este sentido, este artículo propone reflexiones sobre los límites de las concepciones de la teoría de la elección racional de religión, recuperando proposiciones fundamentales de autores de la sociología económica, especialmente Granovetter. Argumentamos que los supuestos de la sociología económica pueden contribuir consistentemente a los problemas que rodean la elección y el mercado religioso, sin por ello renegar de la tradición sociológica.Nas últimas décadas a sociologia da religião viu questionado o paradigma da secularização. A persistência de movimentos sociais religiosamente orientados ao redor do mundo, inclusive na Europa, pareciam apontar para obsolescência de programas de pesquisa que se baseavam em alguma das versões da teoria da secularização. Assim, pesquisadores estadunidenses ensaiaram, desde o início da década de 1980, um salto para fora não só do paradigma da secularização, mas da teoria sociológica. Por exemplo, Rodney Stark e William Bainbridge visavam justamente superar o velho paradigma, substituindo-o por um novo, calcado nas teorias econômica e da escolha racional. Este artigo reflete sobre os limites das concepções da teoria da escolha racional da religião, recuperando proposições fundamentais da sociologia econômica, especialmente, de Mark Granovetter.
