‘Micro’ and ‘macro’ in Parsons and Luhmann’s theories: A metatheoretical discussion

Resumo: The aim of this article is to revisit the wide-ranging controversy over the ‘micro-macro’ distinction in social theory, focusing on the work of Talcott Parsons and Niklas Luhmann. The main objective is to present arguments questioning the interpretation of these two theoretical proposals as representative of sociology exclusively in the macro level. Firstly, the ‘micro-macro’ concepts are problematised, which we understand as categories to distinguish social phenomena in a time-space scale. Then, we present an analysis of the conceptual strategies applied by Parsons and Luhmann to tackle the ‘micro-macro’ dilemma sociologically.

La intención es presentar argumentos que cuestionen la interpretación de estas dos propuestas teóricas como representativas de la sociología exclusivamente a nivel macro. Al principio, se muestra una problematización de los conceptos de "micro-macro", entendidos como categorías que ayudan a diferenciar los fenómenos de acuerdo con la amplitud temporal y espacial. En segundo lugar, se expone un análisis de las estrategias conceptuales empleadas por Parsons y Luhmann para abordar el problema 'micro-macro'.O artigo busca revisitar a longa controvérsia sobre a distinção micro e macro na teoria social, tomando como foco as obras de Talcott Parsons e Niklas Luhmann. A intenção é a de apresentar argumentos que questionam a interpretação destas duas propostas teóricas como sendo representantes da sociologia exclusivamente no nível macro. Num primeiro momento, apresenta-se uma problematização dos conceitos de micro e macro, entendidos como categorias que ajudam a diferenciar fenômenos segundo a amplitude temporal e espacial.
