Islam and the Laïcité: notes on a post-secular approach on studies regarding religious terrorism

Resumo: Approaching the problem of religious terrorism, this article proposes an analysis of this phenomenon, starting from the relation between politics and religion. The article’s objective is to analyse Islamic terrorism in the context of French laïcité. It is argued that the separation between politics and religion in the French context, whose roots have origins in the modern liberal European tradition differently from the Islamic tradition, can be considered as a factor which contributes to the perpetuation of religious (Islamic) terrorism in the country. The author proposes a post-secular and an interdisciplinary approach of International Relations to the study of religious terrorism studies.

Utilizando como método el estudio de caso, el artículo pretende abordar el terrorismo islámico, en el contexto de la laicidad francesa, desde una perspectiva postsecular. Se argumenta que la separación entre política y religión en el modelo francés, cuyas raíces se basan en la tradición liberal europea moderna, a diferencia de la tradición islámica, puede considerarse como un factor que contribuye a la perpetuación del terrorismo religioso (islámico) en el país. El autor propone un enfoque postsecular e interdisciplinario de las Relaciones Internacionales en el estudio del terrorismo religioso.Abordando o problema do terrorismo religioso, este artigo propõe uma análise deste fenômeno a partir da relação entre política e religião. Usando como método o estudo de caso, o artigo tem como objetivo abordar o terrorismo islâmico, no contexto da laïcité francesa, a partir de uma perspectiva pós-secular. Argumenta-se que a separação entre política e religião no modelo francês, cujas raízes têm como base a tradição liberal moderna europeia, diferentemente da tradição islâmica, pode ser considerada como um fator que contribui para a perpetuação do terrorismo religioso (islâmico) no país.
