Resumo: The article is based on US diplomatic documents collected at the National Archives and Records Administration. The aim is to analyze the US diplomats view on the right-wing radical groups that put pressure on Castelo Branco’s government after the 1964 victory, which were generically named “hard line”. North-American observers monitored these groups for fear that they would destabilize Castelo Branco’s government, decidedly supported by the US. Diplomatic documents point to the differences inside the radical right-wing group and, what was little noticed by the bibliography, to the connections between military and civilian leaders. Based on primary sources but also in dialogue with historiography, the text aims at evaluating the objectives and the actions of the radical right-wing in the period 1964-68, with equal attention to the US strategy towards the Brazilian dictatorship.

A ideia é mostrar a visão dos diplomatas sobre grupos radicais de direita que pressionavam o governo Castelo Branco após a vitória de 1964, grupos que foram nomeados genericamente “linha-dura”. Os observadores norte-americanos monitoravam a ação desses grupos por temor que desestabilizassem o governo Castelo Branco, apoiado decididamente pelos EUA. Os documentos diplomáticos apontam a existência de diferenças na direita radical e, o que tem sido pouco notado pela literatura acadêmica, a presença de conexões entre miliares e civis, notadamente grandes proprietários rurais e setores da grande imprensa. A partir de fontes primárias inéditas, mas, também em diálogo com a historiografia, a proposta é avaliar os objetivos e ações da direita radical no pós-golpe, entre 1964 e 1968, com atenção igualmente para a estratégia dos EUA em relação à ditadura. Universidade de São Paulo.
