Using Computer Resources (Spreadsheet) to Comprehend Rational Numbers

Resumo: This article reports on an investigation which sought to determine if the use of spreadsheets in the teaching of rational numbers in elementary education contributes to learning and improved learning retention. The study was carried out with a sample of students from two sixth-grade classes in a public school in Porto Alegre. Results indicated that the use of spreadsheets favored learning and made the classes more participatory for the students, who were able to visualize the processes they were working with. A second test applied five months after the first test showed that students who used the spreadsheets had greater learning retention of the contents. The results also show that the students felt comfortable with the technology, and almost all reported that they were more motivated by the use of computers in the classroom, despite less-than-ideal laboratory conditions. Teaching Rational Numbers using Spreadsheet.Este artigo relata uma investigação que procurou determinar se o uso de planilha como recurso no ensino dos números racionais na Educação Básica contribui para a aprendizagem e uma maior retenção dessa aprendizagem a médio prazo. A investigação foi realizada com uma amostra de alunos de duas turmas da sexta série de uma escola pública de Porto Alegre. Os resultados indicaram que o uso da planilha favorece a aprendizagem e torna as aulas mais participativas para os alunos, que conseguiram visualizar os processos com os quais trabalharam. Um segundo teste aplicado cinco meses após o primeiro mostrou que os alunos que utilizaram a planilha apresentaram uma maior retenção do conteúdo. Os resultados apontam ainda que os alunos se sentem à vontade com a tecnologia e quase todos disseram ficarem mais motivados com as aulas utilizando o computador apesar das condições do laboratório utilizado não ser a ideal.
